According to toppharmacyschools, Savannah is a city in the US state of Georgia, located on the coast. The city has 147,000 inhabitants and an urban area with 410,000 inhabitants (2021).
Savannah is one of the oldest cities in the United States and is also the oldest city in the state of Georgia, having been founded in 1733. It is the fifth largest city in the state of Georgia and a major port on the east coast of the United States. The urban area is not very big, but Savannah is one of the few larger cities on this part of the Atlantic coast. Savannah is located at the mouth of the Savannah River, which forms the border with the state of South Carolina. The coastal region has relatively little tourism here because there are almost no beaches, the environment of Savannah consists of low-lying swamps and tidal rivers. Only Tybee Island has accessible beaches.
Savannah has a humid subtropical climate and is prone to hurricanes. Savannah’s downtown is nationally known for its large collection of historic colonial-era architecture, making it a major tourist destination. The population of Savannah grew quite strongly just after the Second World War, from 96,000 inhabitants in 1940 to 148,000 inhabitants in 1960. During the 1960s, the population shrank by almost 20%, but increased again by almost 20% in the 1970s.. Since then, Savannah’s population has been stagnant.
Savannah has a relatively extensive road network. Interstate 95 forms a north-south connection for through traffic west of Savannah. Interstate 16 connects Macon and Atlanta to Savannah, ending at downtown. Interstate 516 forms a bypass through the west of the city, connecting the ports of Savannah with I-16 and the Hunter Army Airfield.
In addition, Savannah has two parkways that have been run as freeways and are managed by Chatham County. These are the Harry S. Truman Parkway and the Veterans Parkway, both highways are unnumbered.
US 17 is an extension of I-16 and is freeway to the South Carolina border. US 17 passes over the Talmadge Bridge, a large cable-stayed bridge. This is also the largest artwork in the Savannah region.
Tybee Island just east of Savannah is the terminus of US 80. US 17 runs through the city and runs broadly parallel to I-95 through the coastal region of Georgia.
